What it does

A UUID is a 128-bit unique identifier — no central authority needed, collisions are astronomically unlikely. v4 is fully random; v7 (the modern one) puts a millisecond timestamp at the front, giving you both uniqueness and natural sort order — ideal for database primary keys.

Frequently asked

Why prefer v7 over v4?

v7 sorts naturally by time. As database primary keys this gives you better B-tree locality (recent inserts go to the end of the index, not random positions) and you get free chronological ordering when you query.
